Otakuism

I know that there are many people out there who have explained with much vigour about otaku and matters which surround it. However, I would like to have a rant session before Chinese New Year arrives.

I just started playing Disgaea : Afternoon of Darkness (Ironic)

Anyway, I just checked the predictions for my zodiac sign and it mentioned that I should avoid disputes next year and avoid trouble as much as possible. If not I would be in a disastrous situation.

In this post I might insult people so I shall apologize in advance. While typing this I realized the possibility of someone stumbing upon this post after Chinese New Year and disagree with me. That would fulfil the prophecy of having disputes but I shall carry on anyway.

What is an otaku? Wikipedia has referred to it as people with obsessive interests, especially in anime, manga and video games. Some say that it means geek. Of course most people would have read about these in other posts so I shall not go too deeply. Different people might have their own definition of Otaku but what really makes me upset is the vague usage of the word.

Around two years ago, I told LianYL from riuva that I wanted to be an otaku. At that time, he had given me 9238569292639862935 reasons why being otaku was bad but alas, I did not heed his warning.

Two years later, whenever someone mentions the word otaku, I would feel a pang of annoyance. Why be an otaku and add geek to your name? Is it so glorious to be called an otaku? Unless you are some well known person in the anime community (eg, Darkmirage, Tjhan) where you have some recognition, if not, self-acknowledging yourself to be an otaku is rather… rather… hm… I don’t know. =)

3 ^__^

What makes anyone an otaku? The number of animes you watch? The number of figurines you collect? The number of manga you have left unread? There are also other types of otaku, like train otaku and movie otaku.

So what? You memorize the timings for the train and keep all your train passes / tickets? (Depending on what you use) You watch 298356926395862936592635 movies and those movies which are number 1 in the box office, you would watch them over and over again and memorize the dialogs word by word? At the very least, these people knows what kind of otaku they want to be, and not just “Hi I am an otaku.”

Usually when someone comes up to me and says that I would probably ignore them. 90% of the time, these people would be those who watches anime and claims to be an otaku. ” I watched bleach therefore I am an otaku.”

Whatever~ I don’t give a dam about you and you can just get lost. I personally read bleach manga although I no longer watch bleach so I am not trying to poke fun at bleachtards should any of them come to my blog. I just absolutely hate it when people are vague with what they say. By watching bleach you claim to be an otaku? In which sense? Anime? Manga? Sword? Spiritual? What type of otaku are you? Without an attritbute / type (Yugioh =D) you have no right to claim a place in otakuism.

I miss King of Fighters 98 T___T (My pictures and comments are anti-climax)

I heard that my classmate was called an otaku when he went for our school’s Japan trip. (I still hate my GP department and will continue doing so) Otaku is such a common term that I hear it almost everywhere I go. (Its probably because of the people who I come into contact with) Those idiots who use it without discretion really should think twice before mentioning otaku. I would like to see them go to Japan and shout “I AM AN OTAKU” and see them getting caught by the police. (I heard the police there would target otaku more than yakuza. Potential danger is prioritized before actual danger)

Oh yeah I had a friend who claims to be an anime otaku. OK, he defined himself so I did not mind too much. But after a few exchanges about the current (At that moment in time at least) anime, like to aru majutsu no INDEX, Toradora, and Kannagi, I really wanted to slap him. Not only does he not have any idea about those animes, he keeps ranting D Grayman rawks, Bleach rawks, YUI has a nice voice and turns on his music player in a Bleach OP & ED marathon. Sigh. I never watched D Grayman so I shall not give much comments, Bleach was nice until it became draggy but the point is that he does not watch the more recent animes.

I asked him about Code Geass season one and the reply I got back was “Huh? I heard it was not nice so I didn’t watch.” Ok fine, Code Geass is either an anime for you to like or hate so I asked him whether he watched Gurren Lagann. “No” How can anyone who claims to be an anime otaku not watched the most epic anime last year? I have yet to come across a person who says that he / she hates Gurren Lagann so I presume that most, if not everyone,  like it.

Time to go back playing Disgaea (I don’t use Etna nor Laharl at all =))

Otaku, it seems, has become a term in people’s (at least Singaporeans) dictionary to describe people who watches anime. Since Singapore has been known to have Singlish speaking people (Mixing different languages together) I am also guilty of using Chinese terms when I cannot explain something in English, perhaps otaku has been added into the Singlish dictionary.

So, for those of you out there who bothered to read my post all the way to the end, I would like to thank you for your attention. If by chance, you  or any of your friends use otaku without discretion please start to think twice before saying it. Well, most people wouldn’t bother about what I say but learning comes from experience so if anyone ends up in jail for any reasons concerning otaku, well you get to learn a valuable lesson.

P.S I think I might do a quick manga (maybe rant again) post tomorrow after I go to Kinokuniya to get some stuff.
